President's Message
Frank Rodrigues is really excelling himself with his speaker interviews!  This week, he had finally convinced Cal Gardiner, the husband of one of our members, to talk about his experiences as a cinematographer in the film and documentary industries.  He is a third generation in the industry and had a stint as President of the NSW branch of the Australian Cinematographers Association.  He has also been very active in the federal body of the ACS and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 2009.

Cal's early career started as an assistant cinematographer in 1967, and then after 18 months he went freelance. This included working on feature films such as Colour me Dead with Director of Photography (DOP) Mick Borneman, The Set with DOP Sandor Siro followed by The Games with DOP Bob Paynter.  In the 1970s he went to work with his father Jack, operating the 16mm film printing laboratory, Colour Transcriptions, later to become Cinefilm. Some years later upon his father's retirement Calvin returned to his first love, Cinematography. His passions over the years have included competitive sailing and motor racing, including winning a division at the big Bathurst event.

Berrima Marketplace Playground Upgrade
We seem to be finally zeroing in on a Concept Plan that should meet the approval of most stakeholders, although no doubt there will still be one or two dissatisfied customers. This will now have to go to the next available Council meeting and then on to public display to allow community feedback.  We need to achieve certain milestones by August of this year to satisfy the NSW Government funding requirements, so the timetable will inevitably be tight.

Where’s Wally FUNdraising Adventure Journey
Our adventure has bee rescheduled to the 26th of May.  Please adjust your diaries accordingly.  Have you got your teams ready?  Times running out .... You can still make bookings for this great day out in the Southern Highlands via the same Trybooking link (http://www.trybooking.com/BBBZU).

Southern Highlands Botanic Gardens
The Autumn Gardens Weekend and Plant Fair is on the 27th and 28th of April.  The Club will be helping to run the BBQ each day with the focus on sausage sandwiches and bacon & egg rolls.  Come along and bring your family and friends for a fun time.

International
This week one arrival and one departure for MAFO almost on the same day. One pallet of endoscopy instrument cleaning fluid (what did you think happened to those instruments after they traversed your body?!) arrived in Honiara, and one container of hospital supplies left for Livingstone in Zambia. Keep watching this space for news of our compelling new project in Timor-Leste.

This highlight of our Rotary Year is fast approaching, and I have asked Geri Gardiner to help me get it organised.  We have settled on a date that fits in with our President-Elect’s busy overseas travel schedule over the next three months or so – please put Wednesday the 26th of June in your diaries.  We have decided to hold it at the Scottish Arms in East Bowral with a selection of main courses for your delectation, as well as a welcome drink and some nibbles, all for the princely sum of $40 a head.  More details will follow in due course. Could all Directors please start drafting their yearly reports so I don’t have to chase you too hard on the final days.

Possible Peddler’s Market at Bong Bong Racecourse in September
I am pleased to report that there has been significant progress on this possible fundraiser.  Bridget Cosyn has done a great job in setting things in train with the Council and a number of us will be working on the necessary paperwork to be ready when she returns from Japan in mid-April.  It is a bit early to give detail on this potential fundraiser, but rest assured it promises to be another event where the RCBD “punches above its weight”.
